A-to-Z: Zakuska


Zakuska: (Russian, noun) an hors d’oeuvre; a snack; a bite.

A perfect zakuska for a hot sweltering day is this rainbow fruit kabob.  It’s even grillable!


A-to-Z: Yare


Yare: (archaic, adjective) ready; prepared; nimble, quick, agile, lively.

Do you remember the nursery rhyme, “Jack be Nimble?”

It wouldn’t be quite as fun to say “Jack be yare…” now would it?

Xanthic: (adjective) of or pertaining to a yellow or yellowish color

Here is a beautiful bit of xanthic nature for your muse…

Quillet: a subtlety or quibble.

There once was a man who gushed
His quillet with fish was thus:
“They wiggle and squirm
On the hook, like a worm!
They really are not worth the fuss.”

Pokelogan: marshy or stagnant water that has branched off from a stream or lake.

There once was a smelly pokelogan
that came from the town of Hoboken.
It started pristine
but now is gangrene.
The houses around it, all broken.
